TL:DR

It's Red Dress Day, fam, and Vancouver Island is going all in to remember missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people (MMIWG2S). They're saying names, sharing stories, and showing mad respect for those we lost. Plus, the RCMP is getting a bomb squad on the Island, so that's kinda lit but in a safe way, ya know?

The Deets

Okay, so listen up. May 5th was Red Dress Day across Canada, and Vancouver Island showed UP. This day is all about remembering the Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people who are missing or were taken from us way too soon. It’s a day to make sure they ain't forgotten, and the community came together to make some noise.

People threw gatherings, remembrance walks, teas – the whole vibe was about honoring these lives. They even shouted out some names like Brandy Vittrekwa, Loretta Eileen Peters, and Lisa Marie Young. Each of them has a story, and it's important we remember them.

The Huu-ay-aht First Nations and other groups organized events, showing that this is a community thing. They also talked about the impact of residential schools and the trauma that still affects Indigenous communities today. The red dresses? Those are part of the REDress Project and are a whole mood, symbolizing the MMIWG. So powerful.

In other news, the B.C. RCMP is setting up a regional bomb squad on Vancouver Island. This means they can respond faster to bomb situations without having to wait for the ferry. They got a whole ICOR Technology bomb disposal robot with cameras and everything. It was even flexed at a Nanaimo RCMP open house. Stay safe out there!
