The Deets
Alright, fam, so there's this teacher from Prince George, Brendan Tomas Boylan, who got busted for sexual assault, and he tried to pull a fast one. He was all like, "Yo, this trial took too long, so it's unconstitutional, and you gotta drop the charges." Basically, he was saying his right to a speedy trial was violated.
But the court was like, "Nah, we're not falling for that." They said most of the delays were on his side, like his lawyers needed more time, or he wasn't available for hearings. Plus, the complainant was dealing with stuff too, like having a baby. So, the court was like, "It's not our fault, bruh."
The whole thing started in November 2020, and the trial wrapped up in September 2024. He got convicted in November 2024. The court pointed out that the Supreme Court of Canada says trials should be done in 30 months, but they were like, "This wasn't that bad, considering."
Now, he's facing sentencing, and it's gonna be a whole three-day thing starting on September 8 in Prince George. They're gonna drop a pre-sentencing report by August 25, so stay tuned for that. And get this, after the conviction, he signed a thing saying he wouldn't teach anymore. Big oof.
