TL:DR

Okay, so Canada's kinda going through it rn. Almost half the country's clocked systemic racism, business leaders are stressed about an "investment crisis," and credit card fraud is on the rise. NDP's got a leadership race poppin' too. It's a lot, fam.

The Deets

Aight, listen up. Some serious tea is being spilled about Canada. First off, almost half (49%) of Canadians said they've seen systemic racism in their province, according to a Leger poll. That's a fat yikes.

The poll hit up 1,627 people online between August 29 and 31, and the Association for Canadian Studies was behind it all. Jack Jedwab, the head honcho there, was like, "Yo, we need to educate people more about what systemic racism even IS and how it affects everyone." Preach.

Here's where it gets even more sus:

  • 56% of the queens (women) saw it, compared to 42% of the kings (men).
  • 57% of the young bloods (18-34) noticed it, while it was only 44% for the boomers (55+).
  • Quebec and Ontario were neck and neck with 53% and 52% reporting it. Alberta and B.C. were lagging behind at 41% and 42%.
  • 73% of Black Canadians were like, "Duh, it's there," compared to 49% of other non-white folks and only 30% of white Canadians.
  • 52% of people born outside Canada saw it, compared to 49% of those born here.

Kanika Samuels-Wortley, a Canada Research Chair expert on systemic racism, thinks all this awareness and workplace training might be why more people are clocking it now. Makes sense, right?

But wait, there's more! Business leaders are stressing about an "investment crisis" in Canada. The Business Council of Canada is throwing shade at the government, saying they need a plan to cut the deficit if they wanna fund investments with debt. Oof.

And to top it all off, credit card fraud is skyrocketing. Equifax says the fraud rate jumped to 0.75% in the second quarter, compared to 0.44% last year. Stay woke out there, fam!

In other news, the NDP's got a leadership race heating up. Rob Ashton is throwing his hat in the ring as the "first working-class labour candidate." Heather McPherson, Avi Lewis, and Yves Engler are also in the running. May the best candidate win!

Oh, and Toronto's hosting a climate conference to flex Canada's clean tech and climate innovation. Good for them, I guess.

Last but not least, the finalists for the Balsillie Prize for Public Policy have been announced, and the prize money is now a whopping $70,000. Big W for whoever wins!
