TL:DR

Okay, fam, so Saskatchewan is straight-up dealing with a major L. Wildfires are raging, like, a LOT. They've called a state of emergency. People are getting evacuated, and the air quality is sus af. Basically, it's not vibing up there rn. Stay safe, y'all!

The Tea

Aight, listen up. Saskatchewan is going through it rn. Wildfires are spreading like crazy, and the government had to hit the panic button and declare a provincial state of emergency. This basically means they're pulling out all the stops to try and get this under control. They're gonna use every hack in the book to support the firefighters and keep everyone safe. The state of emergency is supposed to last for a month, but tbh, it could be longer, no cap.

The weather isn't helping either. The forecast is giving major L vibes – no rain in sight, which is just gonna make things even worse. If you got fire fighting experience, now's your chance to step up and be a hero, for real. They need all the help they can get.

Like 15 communities have been evacuated, which is a major feels bad. As of Thursday afternoon, there were 17 active wildfires, and eight of them are still wildin' out. 44 structures have been lost to the flames. Most of these fires were started by humans, which is kinda sus if you think about it.

Unlike Manitoba, the government isn't asking for military assistance *yet*. But they are getting backup from Quebec and Alaska with aircraft and firefighters from Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. They even set up a toll-free number (1-855-559-5502) for anyone who's got questions about the fires. So if you're stressing, hit them up.

There are a bunch of fires with names, which is kinda wild: The Shoe Fire (the biggest one, over 216,000 hectares), JaySmith Fire, Pelican2 Fire, Club Fire, Wolf Fire, Pisew Fire, and Ditch Fire. The Ditch Fire is so savage that it's forcing people out of Weyakwin, and it's messing with Highway 2 too.

Three First Nations declared a joint state of emergency. Some evacuation routes are cut off, and some communities are basically trapped by fire and smoke. They’re stressing about not having enough firefighters, equipment, and air support. It's giving major anxiety, fr.

Weyakwin is under a mandatory evacuation. Candle Lake is suggesting people leave if they can, and Creighton is on high alert, telling everyone to be ready to bail at any moment.

Air Quality? More Like Air... Uh... NOT Quality 💀

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) uses the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) to measure air quality. It’s a scale from 1 to 10 (but can go higher, yikes!):

  • 1-3: Minimal health risk – you good, fam.
  • 4-6: Moderate health risk – maybe chill inside?
  • 7-10: High health risk – stay inside, no cap!
  • Above 10: Extreme health risk – emergency levels, lock the doors!

The main problem is the fine particles (PM 2.5) in the smoke. Wildfire smoke is a whole cocktail of gases, particles, and water vapor, including some sus stuff like ozone, methane, sulfur and nitrogen dioxides, carbon monoxide, and other compounds we can't even pronounce. The level of smoke or pollution is measured in parts per million.

Why is 2025 So Extra?

The real tea? It’s the lack of rain, plain and simple. Everyone thought spring rains would keep things chill, but those rains ghosted us. And the forecast is still dry, which is not the vibe. Wind patterns are shifting, too, which means the smoke is gonna spread further south. So yeah, Saskatchewan is having a MOMENT. Stay safe out there, besties!
