TL:DR
Okay, fam, so there's been a whole lotta femicides in Ottawa this year. Tracy Duncan's death is the latest, and the cops already got a suspect in custody. This year already had 4 cases when the 2024 had only 3. Cops are tryna step up their game with new initiatives, but the numbers are still looking sus.
Spilling the Tea
Alright, listen up. Ottawa's been dealing with some heavy stuff. They found Tracy Duncan, and it's being investigated as a femicide. Femicide is the intentional killing of women and girls because of their gender and happens overwhelmingly by men. Cops cuffed Stephen Doane with second-degree murder.
Here's the tea: this is the fourth case this year that's been labeled as femicide. Last year, the cops ID'd only three cases! Even tho the term "femicide" is not in the Criminal Code of Canada but we're calling it what it is; a woman was murdered, often because of her gender.
And it doesn't stop there. The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) is drowning in calls about Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) β like, 18 calls a day on average! They're trying to level up their response with a risk assessment screening tool, a "victim choice reporting" pilot project, and a translation app to break down language barriers. Low-key a W, but stillβ¦
Also, the 2022 inquest into the 2015 Renfrew County murders of Carol Culleton, Anastasia Kuzyk and Nathalie Warmerdam dropped 86 recommendations, one of which that the Province of Ontario declare IPV to be an epidemic. Across Canada, 187 women and girls were killed by violence in 2024. Yeah, it's rough out here, fam. If you got any info on Tracy Duncanβs case, hit up the Ottawa Police or Crime Stoppers. Stay safe, y'all.
