The Tea
Alright, so boom. This is about Cpl. Welby Lloyd Patterson, an Indigenous soldier from southwestern Ontario, who was straight-up legendary back in WWII. He sadly passed away in 1945, but his actions? Still iconic. The Netherlands is giving him the VIP treatment with a museum exhibit dedicated to him.
Like, for real, this dude was awarded the Military Medal for being a total badass in 1944. Apparently, he was out here stopping German attacks and stuff. He fought to liberate Holland before pushing into Germany, and even though he got wounded, he kept going until almost the end of the war.
The Freedom Museum in Groesbeek is hosting this exhibit for eight months, telling Cpl. Patterson’s story and the stories of other Indigenous soldiers. It's gonna be lit! His niece, Maidy Keir, is bringing the whole fam to the opening day to show their support and visit his final resting place. She found out about him through her dad who passed in the 80s and went on a whole adventure digging up deets about him with the help of her daughter and a Dutch researcher.
Maidy, her daughter, and son-in-law will all be at the opening on May 2nd and visit his grave in Holten. Respect. ✊
