Nationally, hate crimes jumped 32% in 2023 alone, and a whole 130% since 2019. Like, what is going on? Some people are saying NS's high rate might be because Halifax has a dedicated hate crimes unit. So, more reporting, more awareness, you feel? Still sus, tho.

There was even an alleged assault on some fishers in Eastern Passage being investigated as a hate crime. They were attacked with fishing hooks and a metal pipe. Deadass?!

And get this: hate crimes are hitting different groups hard. Religion and sexual orientation are major targets. The Jewish community is catching the most hate based on religion, and the 2SLGBTQIA+ community is also in the crosshairs, especially gay and lesbian folks. Crimes targeting race and ethnicity are also up 6%.
