TL:DR

Bruh, a whole grey whale just yeeted itself onto Long Beach. For real, it's deadass. Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and Parks Canada are tryna figure out what's good. Stay away from the whale, don't touch it, and keep your doggos on a leash. Apparently, these whales migrate like crazy, but this one ain't vibin' anymore.

The Deets

Okay, so listen up, fam. On May 7, 2025, a dead grey whale washed up on Long Beach on Vancouver Island. It was spotted chilling offshore the day before. This is a major L for the whale, obviously.

Now, the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and Parks Canada are teaming up to figure out the next steps. They're basically the whale squad, tryna handle the situation.

But here's the tea: they're telling everyone to stay away from the whale. Like, for real, don't touch it. And if you're walking your dog, keep that leash tight. No one wants Fido getting too close to a whale carcass.

Apparently, grey whales are world travelers. They migrate like 10,000 to 12,000 miles every year, going from Mexico to the Arctic. We're talking serious mileage! About 20,000 of these whales pass by Vancouver Island each spring. They usually stop by Tofino to grab a bite, starting in March, and then head back in the fall. This one just didn't make it, RIP.

Word is, the cause of death is still unknown. They're gonna do a necropsy (whale autopsy) but that'll take a couple months to get the results back. Also, the Grey Whale (Eastern North Pacific population) is of Special Concern. The public can report whale harassment, disturbance, collisions, or entanglements to the Observe, Record, Report/ Marine Mammal Incident Hotline or via email. Mariners can also contact the Canadian Coast Guard. Keep it 100 and do your part, fam.
