TL:DR
Manitoba just passed a bill that lets the authorities hold ppl fried on drugs (think meth) for up to 72 hours. They're building "protective care" centers. Some ppl are vibing with it, some are throwing shade. Oh, and the Supreme Court isn't sweating those ostriches, apparently.
The Deets
Okay, so Manitoba's tryna get a grip. They just dropped this new bill that says if you're zooted outta your mind on, like, meth or whatever, the cops can hold you for up to 72 hours. Previously it was 24 hours, but that was mainly for ppl who were drunk.
They're planning on building these new "protective care" centers to keep everyone safe. The first one's supposed to pop up in Winnipeg. Some first responders, parents, and the mayor are all for it. They're like, "Finally, a W!" But not everyone's feeling it. Some locals near the proposed site and some community groups are saying it's sus and hating on the detention. They tried to make changes (amendments), but those got shut down.
The Premier was ready to go full send and keep the session going until the bill passed, and at the end, it did pass with almost unanimous support, with only one dissenting vote. The tweaked out peeps will get checked on regularly and see a doc after 24 and 48 hours. Looks like this thing's gonna become law real soon.
In other news, the Supreme Court of Canada is straight up ignoring that ostrich situation. Apparently, they don't want to hear about it.
