TL:DR
Yo, rescued a newborn fawn from a cliff in Kelowna during a search and rescue training sesh. Little dude was wet and breathing heavy but otherwise chill. They reunited him with his mama, but remember, BC SPCA says leave fawns alone unless they're sus. Fawning season's May-June, BTW.
The Deets
Okay, so get this: COSAR (Central Okanagan Search and Rescue) was doing their thing, training and whatnot, at Kalamalka Lake Park when they found a newborn mule deer fawn vibing on a cliff at Rattlesnake Point. Talk about a major L for the little guy!
Turns out, the little dude was probably only a day old, soaking wet, and breathing kinda fast, but thankfully, he wasn't hurt. They think he just yeeted himself down there by accident or something. It was a joint operation including COSAR and VSAR, and they used a jet boat for access. First time they'd saved a fawn!
The search and rescue squad, being total heroes, carried him back up to where they last saw his mama. Awww! 🥰
But listen up, fam! The BC SPCA wants you to know that fawning season is May to June in BC. Mama deer (does) often leave their fawns alone for HOURS. The babies stay put and mom comes back around dawn and dusk to feed 'em. So, unless a fawn is straight-up sus (like, staying in the same spot for over 24 hours, wandering around looking lost, or crying non-stop), LEAVE. IT. ALONE.
If you DO think a fawn is in trouble, don't be a hero. Hit up a local wildlife rehabilitator or call the Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277.
