TL:DR

Bruh, this is messed up. Inmate at South West Detention Centre, Joseph Gratton, died from a fentanyl OD. He asked for withdrawal meds for, like, a week, but they said nah. Now there's an inquest. Also, Deaf man was killed in jail by cellmate. Jail low-key failed to protect him.

The Deets on Gratton

Okay, so listen up. This dude Joseph Gratton, 31, was locked up at South West Detention Centre (SWDC). He was tryna get clean, right? He was going through withdrawal and asked for a urine test and suboxone (that's the stuff that helps with withdrawal), like, nine days before he, unfortunately, yeeted himself from this life.

But here's the tea: the healthcare peeps at SWDC were all like, "Nah, you good." They said his urine test was negative for opiates and he wasn't showing any withdrawal symptoms. Plus, they were sus 'cause he apparently had a history of diverting his meds, specifically Wellbutrin (that's for depression). So, they didn't give him the suboxone.

Fast forward, he and his cellmate snorted some drugs. Both went unresponsive. The officers tried CPR and gave them naloxone, but only his cellmate pulled through. Gratton was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Turns out, fam, the autopsy showed he died from fentanyl toxicity. They even found a baggie of drugs hidden where the sun don't shine. The whole situation is giving major "L" vibes, and now they're doing an inquest to figure out what went wrong. Apparently, they don't really do re-assessments or drug screens after the initial admission, which is kinda sus, TBH.

The Deets on Gantt

And there's more crazy. Over in Baltimore, a deaf man named Javarick Gantt was strangled to death in jail. His family's PISSED and filed a lawsuit for over $50 million, saying the jail didn't protect him. Apparently, Gantt used sign language to communicate, which made him extra vulnerable in the jail environment.

To make matters worse, they put him in a cell with Gordon Staron, a dude who was already in for first-degree murder and had a history of violence! The family says they can't even get any info about what happened, which is super shady.

Turns out Staron pleaded guilty to strangling Gantt and got sentenced to life without parole. The lawsuit claims Gantt should have gotten special treatment because of his disability and that the corrections officers weren't even monitoring the dorm the night he died. This whole thing is messed up on so many levels.
