Gen Z and Millennials are Feeling the HEAT to Cop a Crib, No Cap 🏡🔥

Young Canadians feel high pressure to buy property. Okay, so boomers and Gen X are living their best lives as homeowners, but like, Millennials and Gen Z are stressing BIG TIME. Apparently, we're feeling major pressure to buy property, almost as much as getting hitched or popping out babies. Alberta

TL:DR

Okay, so boomers and Gen X are living their best lives as homeowners, but like, Millennials and Gen Z are stressing BIG TIME. Apparently, we're feeling major pressure to buy property, almost as much as getting hitched or popping out babies. Alberta and B.C. are the major pressure cookers. Is renting really that cringe?

The Deets

Fam, let's keep it 100. The struggle is REAL. A recent survey by Wahi dropped some tea: young Canadians, especially Millennials and Gen Z, are feeling the major ick to buy property. Like, the pressure is hitting different compared to our older counterparts, Gen X and the Boomers. The survey, which hit up 1,500 Canadians online between June 17–19, 2025, (shoutout to the ±2.53 percentage points margin of error), straight up exposed the generational divide.

So, peep this: 54% of Millennials and 41% of Gen Z are feeling the pressure to own a home. Now check this out: compared to only 30% of Gen X and a measly 13% of Baby Boomers... like, hello?!? Where is this pressure even coming from?? Apparently, it's society being sus, mostly. 59% of Gen Z and 55% of Millennials are blaming societal expectations. It's like, are we not valid if we don't have a mortgage? 🙄

It's not just about the money moves, either. For Gen Z, buying a house feels like as big of a deal as having kids or walking down the aisle! Like, seriously? Millenials are feeling the same kind of pressure to own property as they do to have kids! Like, that's wild!!

And hold up, it gets even spicier. Depending on where you live, the pressure is either chill or straight-up suffocating. If you're vibing in Quebec or Atlantic Canada, you might feel a little less pressure. But if you're out here in Alberta or B.C., get ready to feel the heat. Alberta is literally turning up the pressure on you!

The receipts don't lie: Boomers and Gen X are way more likely to own a place (81% and 74% respectively), while only 61% of Millennials and a sad 21% of Gen Z can call themselves homeowners. 55% of non-homeowners are straight up unhappy with the situation. Like, no kidding.

To top it all off, 50% of Canadians think renting is looked down upon, and 62% are straight up wrong about how many Canadians actually own their homes. Like, we're out here thinking everyone's got a house, but the reality is, a lot of us are just trying to survive out here.

So, what's the move? Are we gonna keep letting society tell us what's up, or are we gonna vibe with our own timeline? 🤔
