TL:DR
Okay, so TEA is that the Chinese government might be behind some sus stuff aimed at a Conservative candidate named Joe Tay. They allegedly dropped a fake "wanted" poster of him online and were low-key censoring his name on Chinese social media. Government peeps are on it, but say it's not a major threat to the election. But still, major yikes!
The Deets
Alright, fam, gather 'round. So, there's this Conservative candidate, Joe Tay, who's been straight-up roasting the Chinese government, right? Well, word on the street is that the Chinese government might've clapped back in a super shady way.
We're talking a fake "wanted" poster of Tay popping up on WeChat, TikTok, RedNote, Douyin and even Facebook - all platforms popular in China. Like, who even does that?! But wait, it gets worse. Apparently, his name was also getting shadowbanned on some of those platforms. Major sus!
The Security and Intelligence Threats to Elections (SITE) task force, which sounds like something straight out of a spy movie, is all over this. They're saying this might be a case of some serious transnational repression, which is a fancy way of saying a government is trying to silence someone living in another country. They were also on high alert due to the fact Hong Kong cops allegedly put a bounty of $1 million HKD on Tay's head as well for information leading to his arrest.
The SITE task force did say the activity wasn't enough to throw the whole election into chaos, but it's still messed with Tay's head, which is totally understandable. Like, imagine seeing a fake "wanted" poster of yourself floating around the internet! That's some straight-up psychological warfare.
A Toronto Liberal candidate Paul Chiang also said some things, but tbh, the main tea is this whole China situation. Stay woke, y'all!
