The Deets

Okay, so listen up, fam. A whole bunch of Canadiansβ€”like almost 3,000 of 'emβ€”got surveyed in March 2025, and the tea is Canadians are stressed about being able to afford food, like, for real. People are side-eyeing the prices at the store more than ever before.

Even though not quite as many people think prices are gonna skyrocket compared to last fall (about 80% now versus 84% before), the anxiety is still real. And get this: more and more peeps think we're gonna see DOUBLE-DIGIT inflation on food. Like, what?! 🀯

So, what's everyone doing about it? People are buying food in bulk, ditching the boujee extras, and hunting for those sales like pros. Fewer people are using coupons or hitting up the cheapo stores, which is kinda sus, but okay.

When it comes to buying food, being able to afford it is still the #1 thing people care about (42%), then comes nutrition (25%) and taste (18%). Newfoundland and Labrador are feelin' the price pinch the most, while Quebec is like, "Eh, it's chill."

And here's a W: people are caring more about local food. Plus, a lot of peeps are checking where their food even comes from (shoutout to the 37% who do it often and the 19% who always do it). Generic brands, grass-fed beef, and cage-free eggs are having a moment. Plant-based proteins are kinda on the back burner tho.

People are being extra about checking those "best before" dates, and tossing food when it's expired is still a thing. But some peeps are still out here not washing their fruits and veggies?? Sketchy behavior. And a whole quarter of people straight up don't check food recalls. Yikes.

As for diets, most people are still omnivores (61%), but the vegan and flexitarian game is getting stronger. Vegetarian? Kinda falling off. Paleo is making a comeback. Trust in farmers is up!
