A new report dropped, and the tea is that about half of Canada's wildlife species are in decline. We're talking a 10% drop on average over the last 50 years. That's wild.

Some species are getting hit HARD. Marine animals like the North Atlantic Right Whales and Leatherback Sea Turtles? Their populations are down 43%. Ouch. And the grasslands? Forget about it. Biodiversity there has plummeted by almost two-thirds (62%). That's a major L.

So, what's the tea? Habitat loss is the main culprit. Think agricultural expansion, new buildings, and just straight-up taking resources from where animals live. Climate change is also throwing a whole tantrum with extreme heat, droughts, wildfires, and floods messing everything up. Invasive species, diseases, overfishing, and pollution all are villains too.

The government's trying to get in on the action to fix it. They've promised to protect and restore 30% of Canada's lands and oceans by 2030. Indigenous-led conservation is another important step, protecting key areas for our animal besties. But some are saying that governments are lowkey making it harder by loosening environmental regulations. Is it giving what it's supposed to give?
