Aight, listen up, fam. The Calgary Food Bank is爆爆in'. But here's the crazy part: it ain't just peeps without jobs. A crazy amount of full-time workers are showin' up, tryna get some food. We talkin' like 27% increase, no cap! In 2024, the Calgary Food Bank gave out 173,354 emergency food hampers, with 57,878 of them going to households where the primary income was, like, wages.
Why tho? Well, wages are straight-up trash. The average is like $19.30 an hour which is sus, and a lot of jobs are sketch with inconsistent hours and zero job security. Plus, the cost of everything is going 📈. It's hitting some peeps harder than others, especially single moms, ppl with disabilities, and our newcomer fam.
And peep this: 32% of those working clients are pullin' double duty, working MULTIPLE JOBS just to stay afloat. Like, when do they even sleep?!
The Calgary Food Bank is tryna step up their game, like, they're tryna serve 1,000 families a day.
Food Banks Canada also pointed out that the number of working families tryna get support increased NATIONWIDE! In 2019 it was 12.1%, but in 2024 it was at a wild 18.1%!
Basically, the whole system is lookin' kinda 🚩. We need to fix this, and quick, because no one should be workin' full-time and still be hungry. The Prez and CEO of Calgary Food Bank straight up urged the Canadian Federal Government to take food insecurity seriously. For real, do better!
